Nano banana comic prompts: copy-paste examples for panels, covers, and strips. Get consistent characters and bold line art in Gemini-style models.

Nano banana comic prompts are structured text instructions that tell Gemini-style image models to render comic art: ink outlines, halftone shading, speech balloons, and panel layouts. The trick is to specify the comic format (strip, cover, single panel), the art style (manga, American superhero, indie zine), and the camera framing for each shot — then let the model handle the rendering. This guide gives you copy-paste prompts you can run today, plus the small syntax habits that keep characters consistent across panels.

Why nano banana models handle comics well

Nano banana models (the nickname for Gemini's native image generation) are good at two things comics need: following long, specific instructions and keeping a character's face and outfit stable when you describe them the same way twice. That means you can write a 60-word prompt that includes a character sheet (hair color, jacket, scar) and the model will usually carry those details into a new pose without you re-uploading a reference.

Comics also benefit from the model's line control. You can ask for "clean 2px black outlines, flat cel shading, no gradients" and get something close to a printable panel instead of a soft digital painting. For a deeper look at how these models handle sequential art, see AI comic book and graphic novel prompts.

The anatomy of a comic prompt

A working comic prompt has five slots. Fill them in this order:

  1. Format — single panel, 3-panel strip, cover, splash page.
  2. Style — "1990s American superhero ink," "black-and-white manga screentone," "risograph indie comic."
  3. Subject — who is in frame, with 2–3 fixed details.
  4. Camera — close-up, medium shot, low angle, over-the-shoulder.
  5. Lighting and mood — hard noon sun, neon alley at night, flat studio light.

Aspect ratio goes at the end. For a vertical strip, use --ar 2:3. For a wide two-panel spread, --ar 16:9. For a square Instagram panel, --ar 1:1.

Example: single superhero panel

Comic book panel, 1990s American superhero ink style, thick black outlines, cross-hatched shadows, a female hero in a red leather jacket and black domino mask crouching on a wet rooftop, medium shot from a low angle, hard moonlight from the left, rain streaks, limited palette of crimson, navy, and gray, no text, --ar 3:4

Example: 3-panel manga strip

Three-panel vertical manga strip, black-and-white screentone, clean line art, a high school student with short spiky hair and a school uniform walking into a convenience store, panel 1 wide establishing shot, panel 2 close-up on his tired eyes, panel 3 medium shot at the register, flat lighting, no dialogue, --ar 2:3

Keeping characters consistent across panels

Consistency is the hard part. Nano banana models do not have a memory between generations, so you have to bake the character into every prompt. Write a 12-word character string and paste it into each panel prompt without changing a single word.

For example, lock this string: a 30-year-old detective with a shaved head, a gray trench coat, and a vertical scar over his left eyebrow. Use it in panel 1, panel 2, and panel 3. Change only the camera and action. If you change "gray trench coat" to "dark coat" in panel 2, the model will redesign the character.

If you need more control, generate a character sheet first — one image with front, side, and back views — then describe that sheet in text for later panels. The AI image composition techniques guide covers how to frame those reference shots.

Dialogue and speech balloons

Nano banana models can render text inside balloons, but short words work better than long sentences. Keep balloon text under six words. If you need a full conversation, generate the art without text and add lettering in a separate tool.

Prompt for a balloon like this:

Comic panel, indie zine style, two-color print (black and teal), a young woman in a denim jacket leaning on a chain-link fence, medium close-up, speech balloon above her head with the text "I'm not going back," clean hand-lettered font, flat afternoon light, --ar 1:1

The model will sometimes misspell. Run the prompt two or three times and pick the cleanest balloon. For more on controlling text in images, see the prompt structure and syntax guide.

Panel layouts and page composition

You can ask for a full page with gutters, but the model may ignore the grid. A more reliable method: generate each panel separately, then assemble them in a layout app. If you want the model to try a page, be explicit about the grid.

Comic page, 2x3 grid of six panels with white gutters, black-and-white ink, a cyberpunk courier with a neon green backpack running through a rain-soaked market, panel 1 wide shot of the market, panel 2 close-up on her boots splashing, panel 3 over-the-shoulder of a drone following her, panel 4 low angle of a neon sign, panel 5 medium shot of her sliding under a stall, panel 6 close-up on her face looking back, high contrast, --ar 2:3

Style recipes for different comic genres

American superhero

Comic book cover, 1980s Marvel style, bold primary colors, heavy black inks, a muscular hero in a blue and gold suit punching upward, dynamic low angle, speed lines, city skyline behind, no text, --ar 3:4

Manga

Manga panel, seinen style, detailed cross-hatching, a lone swordsman in a tattered cloak standing in a bamboo forest, wide shot, dappled light through leaves, grayscale, no text, --ar 3:4

For more manga-specific prompts, see AI anime and manga style.

Indie zine

Indie comic panel, risograph print, two-color (black and fluorescent pink), a teenager sitting on a curb with a skateboard, medium shot, flat lighting, grainy paper texture, no text, --ar 1:1

Noir

Noir comic panel, high-contrast black and white, a detective in a fedora lighting a cigarette in a dark alley, close-up on hands and face, hard side light, rain, no text, --ar 3:4

Common mistakes and how to fix them

Too many characters in one panel. The model will blend faces. Keep it to two characters max, and describe them in separate sentences.

Vague style words. "Comic style" is too broad. Say "1990s DC ink" or "black-and-white manga screentone."

Forgetting aspect ratio. Without --ar, you get a square. Comics are rarely square.

Long dialogue. The model will garble it. Keep balloon text short or add it later.

Changing the character string. Copy-paste the same 12 words every time.

Workflow: from prompt to finished strip

  1. Write your character string and save it in a notes file.
  2. Generate a character sheet to check the design.
  3. Generate each panel with the same character string, changing only camera and action.
  4. Pick the best take for each panel. Expect to rerun 2–3 times per panel.
  5. Assemble in a layout tool. Add balloons and lettering.
  6. Export at 300 DPI for print or 1500px wide for web.

If you want to push the art direction further, the AI art styles complete guide has recipes for ink, watercolor, and halftone looks that mix well with comics.

Prompt template you can reuse

[Format] comic [panel/strip/cover], [style], [character string], [action], [camera shot], [lighting], [palette], no text, --ar [ratio]

Fill the brackets. That is the whole system.
